The best way to make money is by selling fruit to Tom Nook. Your town's native fruit goes for 100 bells, but foreign fruit from other towns goes for 500 bells. You can even sell the shells from the beach, too. 

Occasionally, your villagers will ask you to run them errands. Usually they will send you to deliver a present. If the job is successful they will reward you with clothes or furniture. You can sell the reward to Tom Nook for bells.

Found a fossil but the museum already has it? Sell it to Tom Nook! Fossils are worth a lot of bells even compared to furniture and clothing items.

Money/red rocks! There is always one rock in your town that will shoot out money when hit with a shovel. (note: you cannot do this on wifi!) 

Money trees! You will need a golden shovel to do this! (bury a shovel for a day and then unbury it afterwards and it will be golden). First find a bag of bells, its easy if you just extract money from your wallet into your pockets. Then bury it with the golden shovel. If you're lucky, a money tree will grow and your bells will roughly multiply. The more bells you bury the more likely for it to work!

Balloon presents - occasionally there will be a present tied to a balloon floating in mid-air. You can shoot it down with a slingshot! 

 

Golden Axe - Throw an axe on the fountain and talk to the fountain lady. If you don't lie and be nice to her you will be very lucky if you get this. 

Golden Shovel - Bury a regular shovel for 24 hours and unbury. It should be a golden shovel.

Golden Slingshot - Shoot down 15 presents from mid-air. The next one you shoot down should be a golden slingshot.

Golden (watering) Can - Maintain a perfect town for 15 days. You can do this by making sure your plants and flowers don't wither. Talk to Pelly and ask her about the environment to obtain the golden can.

Golden (fishing) Rod - Obtain all fish. Tortimer will be outside your house when you walk out. 

Golden (insect) Net -  Obtain all bugs. Tortimer will be outside your house when you walk out.

 

Silver Axe - Corresponds to the Golden Axe. Throw an axe on the fountain and talk to the fountain lady. If you don't lie and be nice to her you will be very lucky if you get this.

Silver (fishing) Rod, Silver (insect) Net, Silver Slingshot: Tom Nooks will occasionally sell these silver items at his shop.

Silver Shovel - Every week on a random night the cones on the right side of the city's street (that the bus drives through on) will be pushed to the side. Walk in and talk to Resetti to obtain the Silver Shovel.

Silver (watering) Can - Purchase fifty bags of seeds from Nooks.
